AADO Asian Fellowship Programme 2017
Report from Dr Naman Wahal

April 24 – May 21, 2017

It is a report from Dr Naman Wahal, one of the successful applicants of AADO Asian Fellowship Programme in Queen Elizabeth Hospital at Hong Kong, who had a visit there on
April 24 – May 21, 2017

I was selected for this prestigious fellowship for the months of April and May 2017 in Queen Elizabeth Hospital under Dr. W.Y.Shen. I was informed about my selection well in advance to allow the smooth completion of visa and immigration formalities.

I feel fortunate that the two other fellows from India shared good friendship with me already. We coordinated our arrival and accommodation beforehand.
We arrived on the first day of our fellowship to the hospital with the help of the map and instructions provided to us by Ms. Charis Lau. We met Dr. Shen on the next day when he briefly outlined the whole fellowship schedule.

Queen Elizabeth Hospital is a tertiary care hospital and a referral center dealing with complex pelvi-acetabular and other trauma surgeries along with cold orthopaedic cases. The operation theatres are well designed and use the latest technology. The whole faculty and the residents of the department were very welcoming and willingly discussed the surgical planning, procedure details and rationales.
We had the liberty to go to any operation theatre and learn by the operating surgeon which I found very useful. Dr. K.B.Lee and Dr. Tim Chui did wonderful surgeries and discussed each and every detail of the surgeries with us. The most impressive part was the meticulous pre-operative planning and its execution. The detailed tips and tricks to deal with difficult scenarios were discussed on a daily basis with Dr. Shen. The regular departmental meetings and case discussions centered on important practical aspects of the cases helped me to learn from the experiences of the experts.

During the fellowship, I had an opportunity to attend the advanced AADO Fracture Fixation Course in the Prince of Wales Hospital. The course was very detailed and had lectures from local and international faculty.

I would like to thank AADO for providing me this opportunity to learn from Dr Shen and his colleagues. Dr Shen, apart from being an expert in his field, is a great teacher. His tips for each fracture and the way he answers every query with numerous examples has definitely improved my skills as a surgeon.
