AADO Asian Fellowship Programme 2013
Final Report from Dr M. Kumanan
08 April – 03 May 2013

It is a report from Dr M. Kumanan, one of the successful applicants of AADO Asian Fellowship Programme in Queen Elizabeth Hospital at Hong Kong, who had a visit there on 08 April – 03 May 2013.

It gives me immense pleasure to share my experience as an orthopaedic trauma fellow in Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH), Hong Kong. I would like to thank AADO for providing me an opportunity to undergo this fellowship programme in QEH.

I am very much impressed by the pre-operative planning with the help of digital viewer, electronic patient record maintenance and the operative time management that has been followed here. I had wide exposure of trauma surgeries like fractures around geriatric hip, fractures of ankle, tibia, femur, elbow and fore-arm. And I had Opportunity to see Arthroscopic ACL reconstruction, total knee arthroplasty, total hip arthroplasty and revision THR.

Dr Shen Wan Yiu is a good teacher and well experienced skillful surgeon. I would like to extend my gratitude for his efficient teaching, constant supervision and care that he showed me during the training period. Dr Shen showed me the finer points in humerus nailing, gamma3 nailing, posterior malleolar fracture fixations and periprosthetic fracture fixations for optimal results. Dr Shen introduced me a lot of new concepts in nailing in the peritrochantric region, humerus and span-scan- plan especially for peri articular fractures. His powerpoint presentations were directly pointing towards the common errors and mode of prevention. I would like to thank Dr KB Lee who showed me the pelvic acetabular fracture fixation with the help of intra operative CT scan and many trauma surgeries. I would thank Dr Ivan IP and Dr Gary Yip for their constant support. I would like to thank Dr Wilson Li who showed me ACL reconstructive and shoulder arthroscopic surgeries.

I got the opportunity to attend 26th AADO-OLC Comprehensive Bio-skill course on fracture fixation - special theme on upper limb injury that was conducted during my fellowship programme. Dr N Tang’s guidance on cadaveric dissection was excellent .Presentations of Dr Shen and Dr KB Lee were very useful.

I would thank Ms Terry LEUNG and Ms Wing LEUNG for their support from the beginning of application formalities to my arrival at QEH.
Overall this fellowship training helped to improve my orthopaedic skills and knowledge that would enlighten my future orthopaedic career.

Dr M. Kumanan
